冷通道机柜是通过机房气流进行控制来节省制冷能耗和提高服务器运行可靠性。数据中心对电力的消耗巨大，为了起到节能环保性，数据中心标准建议数据中心采用冷热通道方式布置进行散热。实际使用为了保证冷空气的使用效率，将冷风通道封闭起来，形成冷池，冷池两侧装上推拉门，便于人员进入，顶部为透明式，便于机房内部光线进入冷池，冷通道机柜系统的顶部通常是活动式的，与消防系统联动，一旦出现火灾警报，顶部窗口会自动脱落，以便对冷通道系统进行散热和排烟，同时也便于机房进行气体灭火。
